The Reverend Bunny's Secret Henna Diaries

Henna Pattern from Mali

The diamond shaped patterns are  Khamsa, to protect against the "evil eye".  Brides are considered very susceptible to the envious glance of the "evil eye", and many articles of their clothing and adornment serves to protect them during the fragile passage from girlhood to womanhood.  If a bride suffers attack from the "evil eye", she may be  made infertile, ill, unloved by her husband, or lose her children.   The bride's fertility and health are greatly desired, and healthy children are crucial to the wellbeing of her family, so the jealous destructive  forces of the universe, personified as the "evil eye" must be deflected.  The diamond form is an eye in itself, and stares back at the "evil eye", forcing it to blink, and look away from the wearer!

The triangle forms are often referred to as "brides" in North African art.  They are related to the pubic triangle of Astarte, and the triangular icon of Tanith; both symbols of the female source of life, fertility and fecundity.  Also, the bride, in her 7 layers of robes and adornments, seated on her dais at the night of the henna, is a pyramid of jewels, rich fabrics and beauty.
