| The Arabic word "henna"
and the
Arabic word for "tenderness" come from the same linguistic
root.
In most henna using cultures, henna is very closely associated with
affection,
love, tenderness and sexuality. The word hennaed on this hand is
"affection" copied from a 13th century Iraqi script, and the pattern is
derived from Islamic art of the Levant in that
period.
Paintings from that period in Iraq show henna that is similar to this
hand.
Courtesans through out
the medieval
period in the Middle east had very elaborate hennaes to enhance their
beauty
and sensuality. Sa'di, Persia's greatest poet wrote in the
13th century in the city of Shiraz. He wrote passionately of
loving
courtesans, the beauty of his lovers, and how one should never
scorn
love. In Shiraz, a beautiful woman had wide black eyebrows,
hennaed hands, scented with perfumes, and was graceful and
seductive.
Sa'di man reached out to the divine by adoring them with all his
being.
Sa'di often argued that a courtesan or prostitute's beauty and love is
as worthy a path to spiritual perfection as prayer and self denial.
