many medical journal articles and scientific reports on P-Phenylenediamine.

PPD black henna hurts people!  These are pictures of PPD black henna tattoos one to three weeks after application.   A PPD black henna tattoo may look great for a few days, but a serious reaction may follow in up to 85% of applications according to a UCLA Medical Center dermatologist.

"This is how my daughter's PPD black henna tattoo turned after returning from Bali.

The worst of it though is she has been feeling ill for the whole week that we have been home. Muscle
weakness, headaches, sore throat, stomach ache and light headeness. We are off to the doctors today to
show them this information on PPD to see if her symptoms are related."

This tattoo was  applied   on the 20th April 2001.  This photograph was taken 10 days later ( picture above) .

"Thought you might like to see how they (the black henna tattoos) look today. The one on her arm is now 1 week and 3 days old.

Following is a letter from another mother of a child who had black henna tattoos applied:

Unfortunately my 6 year old son had a black henna tattoo 4 weeks ago, three infact. He had them on both upper arms aprox. 8cm x 2cm.We were holidaying at (name withheld). First he got one and then 2 or 3 days later he had it touched up as it had faded so fast. The ink was jet black and dried instantly. Then a few days after that he had another one on his other arm so in all ,3 doses. We returned to (withheld) and on the way home on the plane he developed a fever, runny nose and generally unwell.I noticed one of his tattoos had started to blister and took him straight from the plane to the doctor. ... There was no sign of the ink and both "tattoos" had become massive blistering oozing messes not to mention the discomfort with intense itching. We took him to the Children's hospital in (name withheld) . The doctor rang the poison bureau after I explained I had seen the internet site and believed he had been exposed to PDD.  The doctor referred him to a dermatologist. We saw the dermatologist last week, 3 weeks after the first tattoo. He prescribed oral cortisone starting with 20mg and slowly decreasing. After a week of this he was generally unwell again and he had
developed a secondary reaction with itchy blisters all over his body. I took him back to the dermatologist yesterday and he was amazed things had not improved and his glands were swollen under his armpits. His secondary blisters cover his face, back, chest and thighs. The only way to relieve the itching is to apply sorbelene mixed with cortisone ,cover in gauze and bandage. I mentioned I was concerned he may be suffering internally as well and he admitted he didn't know but wants him to be checked out by a paediatrician on Monday and have some blood tests. Today he started vomiting which has been going on for 5 hours now. "

"About two years ago I had a reaction to a "henna" design of a dragon. The color faded quickly which surprised me, and about two weeks afterwards my skin welted up about a quarter of an inch in the exact pattern of the dragon. The itching was bad enough to keep me awake at night for several days. The swelling went away, but the pattern stayed for almost a year. "
